Abstract:

Substance abuse is an increasingly serious public health problem in India, especially among adolescents who are more vulnerable to early exposure and addiction. Recent reports indicate a disturbing trend: a significant drop in the age of initiation. Reportedly, around 5,500 adolescents start using tobacco every day. This underscores the need for timely and effective educational interventions to raise awareness and prevent substance abuse at an early stage. The present study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of the Video Assisted Teaching Program (VATP) on knowledge of substance abuse among adolescents. The study employed a true experimental design with 60 adolescents selected from private colleges in Moradabad. The participants were equally divided into experimental (n=30) and control (n=30) groups by a simple random sampling technique (lottery method). The experimental group received VATP intervention, while the control group received no structured teaching program. The results showed a significant increase in the experimental group's knowledge level. After the intervention, the results showed that 63.3% of participants in the experimental group had profound knowledge (score range: 23–28), whereas none in the control group did. In the experimental group, the mean knowledge score significantly improved from 9.47 to 22.57. Statistical analysis showed the effectiveness of the intervention (t = 16.062, p < 0.001) and identified VATP as a highly effective strategy for enhancing adolescent awareness of substance abuse.
