The Pedagogy-Andragogy-Heutagogy Spectrum in Secondary Mathematics Education: A Theoretical and Practical Review

Abstract:

As mathematics education evolves to meet the demands of Industry 4.0, there is a critical shift from teacher- led instruction toward self-determined learning models. This paper explores the application of the Pedagogy-Andragogy-Heutagogy (PAH) spectrum in secondary mathematics to foster dynamic, engaging learning outcomes. The study utilizes a theoretical review and a practical analysis of five instructional experiences, supported by 38 peer-reviewed sources published between 2020 and 2026. The findings indicate that transitioning along the PAH spectrum significantly enhances mathematical capability and learner autonomy. Practical evidence suggests that while pedagogical scaffolding provides a necessary foundation, moving toward heutagogical research papers increases student engagement and conceptual depth. The study concludes that a balanced PAH approach is vital for preparing secondary students for higher education and the modern workforce. Furthermore, institutional support for teacher professional development in these methodologies is essential for sustainable educational reform.
